Captain Michele Miller has served in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) since 1988, and experienced an extensive career at sea as a warfare officer. Since December 2009 Michele has been the Director of the Navy People Career Management Agency working with a team of over 160 people who are responsible for the career management of the over 14,000 officers, sailors and Reserve members of the RAN.

As a part of the first wave of women serving at sea in the RAN, Michele’s career at sea has included as the Commanding Officer of the Patrol Boat HMAS BUNBURY in 2000-2001 which conducted operations to counter illegal fishing and illegal immigration in Australia’s Northern waters. As the Executive Officer of the Frigate HMAS STUART in 2003-2004 she served in the Middle East area of operations, conducting security protection of the oil terminals off the coast of Iraq and thwarting terrorist attacks on these pieces of vital infrastructure. In 2007 Michele became the first woman in the RAN to command a major fleet unit, the Frigate HMAS PERTH based in Western Australia. At the end of 2009 she was promoted to Captain.

A graduate of the Australian Defence Force Academy, Michele commenced her Navy career with an Honours Degree in Science through UNSW@ADFA. She also has completed the ADF’s Command and Staff Course and attained a Graduate Diploma in Management and Defence Studies and a Graduate Certificate in Maritime Studies.
